13 Nights of Halloween Horror part 14 - Prevenge

Prevenge
88 Mins
Dir. Alice Lowe
2016/UK

How do you feel about a movie that deals with a pregnant woman going on a killing rampage?  Sounds fun right? Prevenge is more of a dark comedy then an out and out horror film, but there is enough stabbing and the sauce spilled that it would appeal to some horror fans.

Ruth is a widowed seven-month pregnant woman who seems to randomly go around killing people.  As we follow her along we learn that she actually has an agenda, the more people she kills the more we put the story together as to why she is doing it.  Of course, then there is always the what is making her do it, and that is her unborn fetus inside her that is guiding her along in the killing.  Seems her fetus is talking to her and instructing her on what to do.
It is a rather simple story really, stalk, kill move on and that is where the movie falters.  It never really goes much deeper than that.  It is mostly 88 mins of watching Ruth stalk people, kill them, sit in her hotel room, and visit her midwife for regular checkups.  After the first few kills, which are mostly visceral you are left wondering ok I get it, but what else do you have.  And truth of the matter there is nothing else.

Where the movie succeeds is that it was written, directed and stars Alice Lowe who was eight months pregnant during the time of shooting.  While the writing falls a little short, her directorial debut is good and the acting it probably what stands out the most.  Alice plays the character of Ruth very deadpan with the humor, where she can be a woman on a mission to murder and then turn around and be motherly, like in the scene when she kills DJ Dan and cuts his dick off and when his senile mother comes into the room bedroom and Ruth kindly leads her back into her bedroom and tucks her in and asks if she wants some hot chocolate.

Prevenge is a different type of movie then we usually will be watching this month, but sometimes it is good to take a little break, and watch something light hearted, even though it is still filed with blood.  Tomorrow we will be back on track with more terror and screaming.
