31 Nights of Halloween Horror - Night 18 - DeepStar Six

DeepStar Six
99 mins.
Dir. Sean S. Cunningham
USA/1989

Rounding out our 80s double feature and I can hear the groans from the bottom of the ocean already.  We are watching the worst of the underwater creature trilogy of movies that came out in 1989.  The other two being The Abyss and Leviathan.  Tonight we are going crabbing with DeepStar Six.

In space no one can hear you scream, but at the bottom of the ocean women don't wear bras.  At least not at DeepStar Six which is the name of an underwater naval base where a group of people (much like Alien) are working on a doing something with underwater missiles or some shit.  It's come to the end of their already over long run and they are preparing to go home (much  like Alien). When what should happen but they discover some kind of underwater cavern.  They detonate the cavern and head out to explore, but in doing so they unleash some sort of creature (much like Alien) that has presumably lay dormant for many years.

First scout ship goes missing and then some unforeseen force knocks into the observation pod knocking it to go teetering over the edge and deep into the abyss of the ocean.  Mini sub heads out and rescues some people in the observation pod, but not before a few of them rest in a watery grave.  Our two main characters/lovers are safe and back at DeepStar Six where they prepare to go home.  But when Miguel Ferrer is part of your crew you know something is going to get fucked up when he accidentally activates one of the missiles.  A guy in a deep sea outfit from the poster of the film goes out to make repairs and spots the mysterious creature, in bringing him back aboard they apparently only bring in half of him, the creature keeps the bottom half and joins everyone inside for the fun.  So losing air, waiting for pods to decompressurize and a giant crab like monster lurking somewhere underwater inside the ship the crew have their hands full on escaping.  But through it all just like before our two main characters/lovers survive and surface from the ocean depths to the glorious sun above.  And just went you think the nightmare has ended Jason pops up out of the water and grabs the...I mean the crab monster pops up out of the water attacking our survivors for one last scare.

The whole first half of this Alien-like rip off is dealing with the crew warding off catastrophes with the ship and trying to get home and then at some point someone remembered maybe they should have a monster in the sea monster movie.  Enter a giant crustacean type creature and all I can think of is I wonder what this would taste like with some melted butter and how much meat are in those claws.  Roger Corman would be proud of this one.  Director Sean S. Cunningham who brought us the original Friday the 13th makes his return to horror nine years later and really it is quite a lackluster return.  Where Friday the 13th was heavily influenced by Mario Bava's Bay of Blood, DeepStar Six is heavily influenced by Ridley Scott's Alien.  Why does bad shit always happen to these people when they are about to leave to go home, why doesn't it happen in the beginning or middle of their trips? Ah well, like Bigfoot movies, I am a sucker for Sea Monster movies and I will sit through whatever you throw at me, but DeepStar Six really has a lot to be desired.  Alas we leave the bottom of the ocean tonight and head into the bay for tomorrow night's feature.
