31 Nights of Halloween Horror - Night 24 - Happy Death Day
Happy Death Day
96 mins.
Dir. Christopher Landon
USA/2017
I remember seeing this trailer last year and thinking, wow this looks stupid and boring. But then positive reviews started coming in. Huh, I am surprised to hear this is good, I guess I will check it out. So I did and now you must suffer too.
"Tree" short for Theresa, our main character, she is a cunt. She wakes up in some guy named Carter's dorm room. Tree is a bitch to him and leaves, walks back to her dorm, is a bitch on the way and a bitch to her frat mates including her roommate who tries to give her a cup cake for her birthday. There is a party later that night she heads out to and is murdered by a man wearing a baby mask that is a mascot for the college. Upon her death she wakes up back in Carter's dorm room and the cycle begins again.
Monotony ensues as we watch this scenario happen over and over again with Tree eventually trying to figure out what the hell is going on and bring Carter along for the ride. She comes to the assumption to stop her birthday from repeating she must find out who is trying to kill her and stop them. Along the way she realizes what a cunt she is and changes her ways to become a better person and eventually falls in love with Carter. But when she kills her murder and the cycle does not stop did she kill the right person. At this point do you even give a shit?
Excuse me while I go stick my head deep into a toilet and puke. To say this movie sucked is an understatement. The trailer is very misleading in thinking this is a horror film, there is a little stalk and slash going on, but there is bunch of humor thrown in, romance and a whole lot of annoying characters. Short review? Yup, cause nothing really happens in this movie to give a shit about. It is the Groundhog Day scenario so the same thing happens over and over again. It gets too repetitive and at a point you are wondering when something of importance will happen and once it does, you ask yourself, THIS is the reason why Tree is being killed? Thank the horror gods I did not pay to see this in the theatre, I would have been thoroughly pissed.
Perhaps if this was marketed as more of a dark comedy with slasher overtones I wouldn't have had such a problem with it. But going in expecting a horror film and finding out it is really a movie for 12 year old girls to enjoy was a little disheartening. Like your horror with bite? Avoid this at all costs. Love Lifetime channel movies, have I got the flick for you. Even worse, there is a sequel coming out in February. On the plus side, we had a pretty good run. Sure we watched some bad movies so far this month, but I think it is safe to say for the rest of the month, none will be as bad as this.
