One of the greatest and most bizarre stories in the annuals of horror comes from this grindhouse classic where actually no blood is drank, but we still love it none-the-less. So in honor of a true exploitation horror classic, tonight I will Drink Your Blood.
Stay with me here. A group of satanic hippies calling themselves SaDoS (Sons and Daughters of Satan) led by Horace Bones, are performing a ritual in the woods which is spied upon by Sylvia. Upon detection she is cut up and presumably raped by a couple of the cult members. As fate would have it the hippie cult's van breaks down so they have to shack up in a run down practically abandoned town that is waiting to be demolished once the local dam is finished. Sylvia lives there with her little brother, Pete and veterinarian grandfather. Far as we can tell the only other resident is Mildred who runs the local bakery that specializes in meat pies. The Satanic Hippie Cult take over an abandoned hotel in town and grandfather goes to have a word with them for roughing up Sylvia. The members of SaDos beat him up and force feed him some LSD. Pete comes to collect his grandfather and is pissed off at what they did to him. For whatever reason later that night Pete goes out with a gun and a flashlight and almost gets attacked by a rabid dog with rabies. He shoots the dog and so the seeds of Pete's grand scheme of revenge are planted.
Pete goes back to the dead rabies infected dog and extracts it's blood and injects it into Mildred's meat pies which the Satanic hippie cult buys to eat at the bakery the next day. And we all knows what happens when you eat rabies infected blood. You go bat shit crazy and want to kill everyone around you. Well according to the CDC website, not really, but for the purposes of this movie that's what happens. So our Satanic hippie cult now foaming at the mouth, head out on a killing spree. Word gets out and Mildred has her boyfriend who is head of the construction crew at the local dam to send some guys out to confront the Satanic rabies infested hippie cult. Couple of the construction workers find one of the Satanic hippie girls that isn't showing signs of infection yet. They bring her back to their barracks and they all have sex with her. Somehow this infects all the construction workers with rabies, so now everyone is a foaming at the mouth lunatic with the intent to kill. In the end the cops show up guns blazing killing everyone because death essentially sparing the infected because by hydrophobia is a horrible way to die.
The movie plays out as crazy as it sounds. Cheap ass HG Lewis looking blood, fake looking severed body parts, hell even the foam at the mouth looks bad, but put it all together and you have a notorious film that lives up to it's extreme sounding title. While it does take a little while for the rabies to set in, the beginning of the movie is by no means slow. Cult leader Horace played by Bashkar and his right hand man Rollo played by George Patterson do great jobs in overacting. Even the culprit of the film the kid Pete, does a stand out believe-able job. Played totally straight and always over the top. I Drink Your Blood is a grindhouse classic that needs to be seen to be believed. Like the dirtier things in life? You can't go wrong with this film. Even the trailer is memorable with this one.
