31 Nights of Halloween Horror - Night 27 - Last Shift
Last Shift
90 mins.
Dir. Anthony DiBlasi
USA/2014
Continuing in our Satanic hippie cult theme, we have this newer entry called Last Shift. We are almost to the end don't quit on me now.
The title of the film refers to rookie cop Jessica who is working the very last shift in a police station about to close it's doors forever in lieu of new station which has opened down the road. Her mother begs her not to become a police officer as her father was one who was killed in the line of duty, but for whatever reason she needs to prove herself. She gets the grand tour of the station, she just needs to answer any calls if they come in but all 911 calls should be rerouted to the new station. A Hazmat team will becoming to pick up some evidence around 4am. Simple enough job. Stay awake and don't leave your post.
First of the weird shit starts with Jessica hearing a knock at the door, she opens to answer and there is no one there. She heads back in and standing behind her is a homeless man who pisses on the floor. She kicks him and out and next up is a phone call from a woman in panic saying she is trapped. Lights flicker, noises are heard down the hall, homeless man somehow makes his way back into the station, this time she locks him up in a holding cell. More distress calls from the same woman who she finds out is named Monica Young. Blah blah blah, more weird shit happens, TVs come on and play a video interview of a satanic cult where we begin to piece together out story. So Satanic hippie cult worships some demon name Paimon, bunch of cops get killed apprehending them. They are brought into this very station where they all committed suicide while there. So the place is either haunted by the Satanic hippies cult or this demon thing is hanging out at the station making the night suck for Jessica. She is seeing dead people, turns out her distress woman caller, Monica, was a victim of the cult, so she is getting calls from dead people. It's all enough to make you think you are losing your mind. And every time she thinks she is, she snaps back to reality and nothing is there.
So is all this spooky ghosts moving, seeing things shit worth it? Should I be watching this movie Damien? If you come over my house, no. I wouldn't show this to you. I found the whole flick rather uninteresting despite all the creepiness happening. It was just all one event after another. Creepy shit happens, she investigates, something creepy happens, she gets scared, everything returns to normal. Over and over it is the same scenario. Yes some of the scenes look good, but there is not enough to keep things flowing. When a cop shows up to check on you and it turns out he has a giant exit wound in the back of his head and then disappears, there has to be a point where you say, "You know what, this job isn't cut out for me. I'm out of here". Or when your dead father calls you on the phone, just say sorry wrong number, grab your bag and split. One night I heard some scratching in the ceiling of my house, I knew I either needed to call an exterminator or a priest. Either way I had a bag packed and ready to head out the door if it was the later. Sometimes you just need to let the ghosts win. So how does it end? Let's just say with a bang, but not the kind that leaves you surprised.
