31 Nights of Halloween Horror - The Hole in the Ground

The Hole in the Ground
90 mins
Dir. Lee Cronin
2019/Ireland

Here we go again, god damn kids.  Always causing trouble.  But this kid is pretty cool, he is afraid of spiders and wants to kill them.  Until he catches one and eats it.  WTF?!  Apparently there are worse things that come from holes in the ground, other than spiders.

Sarah and her son Chris are relocating to the countryside in Ireland to start life anew. Mom loves son, son loves mom and is trying to adjust to life without asshole dad.  In above incident where Chris gets pissed off because his mother wouldn't kill a spider and instead lets it go, he gets pissed and says dad would kill it for me and runs off into the vast woods.  Sarah goes off chasing him, but can not find him.  Instead she stumbles across a gigantic sinkhole in the middle of the forest.  No big deal apparently, Chris emerges from some trees and they head home.  Slowly Sarah notices some changes in Chris and the crazy old lady neighbor tells her it's not her son.  But she is later found dead with her head buried in the ground (still attached to her body, mind you.). Anyway this starts to plant the seed in Sarah that maybe Chris isn't her son, he is acting weird, there is the whole spider eating incident I mentioned earlier, which should set off more red flags than a Tiananmen Square protest, plus outbursts of incredible physical strength against her.

Eventually Sarah goes full on fuck off, you are definitely not my son and the thing that is Chris goes full on Vince McMahon Jr. throwing her around the kitchen.  So if this is not her son, what is it and what happened to her real son?  And what does that giant hole in the ground have to do with anything, considering it is the title of the movie.

If you ever saw Here Comes the Devil, there are similarities between the films with children getting lost and replaced by doppelgängers.  But I liked Here Comes the Devil better.  Hole in the Ground lacks any real terror, it starts to build up tension and you think shit is bout to hit the fan but it never goes that extra effort to make you afraid.  Fake Chris is so damn polite, you are like who cares, this kid isn't so bad, ok so maybe he eats spiders, but don't we all when we are sleeping?  Not a bad flick, not boring, not scary, just nothing to make note of.  Go watch Here Comes the Devil for a better effect.
